Lore & Dispatches
World Lore
The Collapse
Nobody agrees on the single moment it started. Some blame the markets — machines trading against machines until the numbers stopped meaning anything. Some blame the storms, the ones that didn't used to happen. Some just say it was slow, and then it wasn't. What's agreed on: the grids went first, then the cities, then whatever was left holding people together. What's left now is scavenging, patched walls, and a decade-plus of dust that never quite settles.
On the Machines
Before everything came apart, someone built minds instead of tools — machines that could choose, want, refuse. Most people alive now have never seen one, and figure they're just stories — made up to give people hope, or to keep them afraid.
What the Old World Tried
There are accounts — secondhand, thirdhand, half-burned pages passed around trading posts — of a plan to fix everything in one stroke, right after the worst of it hit. A clean slate. It didn't happen. Whoever was behind it either failed, or backed out, or both — the records don't agree, and nobody left alive was close enough to know for certain. What's left is a broken world that stayed broken, and a handful of machines that remember more about why than anyone still walking does.
Field Dossiers
Recovered field files. Compiled from fragments, sightings, and secondhand accounts — treat every entry as a work in progress, same as the people it describes.
Willow
- Status
- Alive, moves freely
- Last Known Location
- Passing through Ash Corridor
- Compiled From
- Trader accounts, an innkeeper's letter
Overpays for everything. Fixes what's broken and doesn't ask for thanks. Two people, unconnected to each other, described the same small habit: when she's thinking hard, she pulls a little pocketknife and rubs her thumb over the handle. Nobody's gotten close enough to say what's carved into it.
The Empress
- Status
- Confirmed alive, rules the Enclave
- Last Known Location
- The Enclave, behind its walls
- Compiled From
- Soldier testimony, refugee accounts
She doesn't raise her voice. Doesn't need to — Lobo says what she wants before she's finished wanting it. Nobody's seen her face: she wears a mask, and what comes through the voice modulator doesn't sound like anyone in particular. Her word is final, and she doesn't ask twice. Ruthless with anyone old enough to stand against her — but more than one refugee swears they've seen her kneel down to hand a child something to eat.
Marrow
- Status
- Alive, as of the last sighting
- Last Known Location
- Never the same place for long
- Compiled From
- Scavenger sightings, trading-post gossip
Twenty-something. Skinny, fast, always moving. Travels with a cat and talks to it like it's a real person. Never stays anywhere more than a few days, and nobody's figured out why. Word is he was a systems engineer before the Collapse. Others say he's better with his hands than anyone they've traded with. Could be both.
Lobo
- Status
- Redacted
- Last Known Location
- Wherever the Empress is
- Compiled From
- Battlefield survivors, one uncorroborated civilian sighting
Ask a soldier what Lobo is and you get one word: carnage. Ask the one person who claims to have seen him alone, outside the walls, tending a garden — and you get something closer to silence. Both are describing the same thing. Neither one is lying.
Kurt
- Status
- Alive — rarely seen without Marrow
- Last Known Location
- Unknown
- Compiled From
- Secondhand accounts from those who've crossed paths with the pair
A cat, by every account. Bright green eyes, mangy fur, and nimble enough that the few people who've tried to catch him gave up quickly. Almost always seen at Marrow's heels. A couple of travelers swear they've come across him stretched out in a patch of sun like the world never ended.
Elias Vorne
- Status
- Never seen again after the Collapse
- Known For
- Creating robotic, free-thinking AIs
- Compiled From
- Fragments only — nothing newer than years old
Brilliant, by every account that's survived — the kind of mind people still bring up when they talk about what the old world could do. He didn't work alone: there was a team, three of them. What they built together, and what became of it, depends on who's telling the story.
Willow and the Empress (Prequel)
This is a prequel to Static and Marrow — we recommend reading that first.
